HK Electric: No Nuclear Energy in Near Future

By Florence Shiu

HK Electric is not planning to develop nuclear energy but consider adopting wind power, said Esme Lau, public affairs manager (Media & Community) of Power Assets Holdings Ltd. yesterday.

The government plans to increase the generation of nuclear energy, according to the Policy Address, to ease the air pollution problem. But the Hongkong Electric Company, Limited (HK Electric), which changed its old brand name to Power Assets Holdings Ltd., said they will focus on green power supply, but constructing nuclear plant is not in their agenda.

“Although engineers believe nuclear energy is save to generate, but after the 311 Fukushima incident, the public has doubted on the safety of nuclear energy supply,” said Lau, “since public acceptance is always our big concern, therefore we do not have any plan on developing nuclear energy at present.”

At the present, there is a wind turbine operating in the wind power station in Lamma Island which runs by Power Assets. Lau said they are currently working on the construction of offshore wind farms off Lamma Island and planning to set up about 35 wind turbines in the coming future.

She added that the company is going to build a solar-panel plant which consisting 5,500 solar panels. The construction is expected to complete before the end of this year.
