TVB drama series “When Heaven Burns” set off an upsurge in Hong Kong. Despite the low rating, global media specialist Ho, Yuet-fung said, TV broadcast channels should continue taking more of this type of drama. She also pointed out that Hong Kong TV standard is far from satisfactory.

As a drama producer at CBS in America and TVB in Hong Kong, Ho said, producing dramas like “When Heaven Burns” can provide freshness to audience. “To produce more different types of drama, we need more new blood into our TV script-writing industry.” Ho explained.

However, as “When Heaven Burns” was broadcasted in the prime-time, Ho thinks this practice was a bit strange. Because the drama involves the theme of cannibalism, children may not accept.

When being asked about the “copying culture” of Hong Kong drama, Ho did not deny the poor quality of Hong Kong TV series. Hong Kong film, for example, she pointed out the Hong Kong film and television industry is no shortage of talent, such as Anna Hui who produced “A Simple Life” which won awards and recognition overseas.

Ho also spoke of the 20 to 30 years before, the script writers in Hong Kong has in fact copied from foreign TV drama, “but the audience had less contact on foreign drama, so they couldn’t aware of it.”

“Most of the drama themes are very similar, it is important to bring out the themes with different techniques.” she said.
