Joseph Cheng, the spokesperson of the Alliance for True Democracy (ATD), doubted the sincerity of Hong Kong government on the political reform.

Hong Kong government announced the formation of the consultation group for political reform last week. Cheng showed two concerns on the issue today on a university talk.

“Frankly speaking, Hong Kong government needs to wait for the confirmation on the reformation,“ Cheng said, “ [by executing general suffrage] can the central government accept that the candidate as the chief executive of Hong Kong is not the candidate they preferred? If the one they preferred will be elected for sure, then is it a real election that meets the international standard?” By the ‘international standard’, it refers to if there is a real competition in the election, Cheng said.

Different parties gathered to put forces on a commonly agreed political reformation like ‘Occupy Central’, a campaign that propose its participants to occupy the main streets of Central if the political reform does not meet most of the public requirement and fail in having a general election in Hong Kong.

Cheng went to Taiwan last week to meet Shih Ming-the, the former chairperson of the Democratic Progressive Party that supports Taiwan independence last week. Shih showed his support on ‘Occupy Central’ later after the meeting. Some questioned that if the meeting of Cheng and Shih is agreed by the ATD since It is not going to join the occupying action.

“It is making something out of thin air! It is not true indeed!” Cheng answered agitatedly. “ I’ve consulted the ATD’s opinion on this and they all shown positive feedbacks. I will not do anything that irritates the group.” He added, “I will resign from the ATD if we no longer share the same view one day.”

Although the ATD is not joining the campaign, Cheng will participate ‘Occupy Central’ with his own name and he “had the preparation for violating the law and be put in jail. “ He said.

The ATD is a coalition of pan-democrats to fight for universal suffrage in Hong Kong. It is composed of 27 Legislative Council member members such as the Civic Party, Democratic Party and Labour Party in Hong Kong.
