Cheung Yu-shek, the spokesperson of Alliance for True Democracy, said today that he also wants more free-to-air TV licences, an issue that has been very popular in Hong Kong society as Hong Kong Television Network (HKTV) was neglected by the government without a clear explanation.

Cheung participated in a talk in Hong Kong Shue Yan University today. He mentioned that the Hong Kong television market was unhealthy now, as one company was too strong while another one was too weak, ‘this makes the citizens have no choice to make.’ Cheung said he understood that the citizens’ most important entertainment was watching TV, ‘therefore all of us hope the programmes to have higher quality.’ He explained that with more competition comes higher quality, therefore he supported the government to give out more licences.

A student asked Cheung whether he thought the government’s decision contains political considerations or not. Cheung said it depends on how we define ‘poiltical’, ‘all the things in the society are related to political, so it is hard to say.’
