HK should learn from Olympic spirit

2008-03-26

A Hong Kong equestrian director emphasized that Tibetan should not do anything against the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on August as there are no relationship between politics and Olympics.

Director of Corporate Administration, Equestrian Events (HK) of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad Co Ltd., Dr. Horace Yuen said everyone should not prohibit athletes’ rights for particapting in Olympics. “We should keep peaceful to welcome the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. The Olympic spirit is to unite everyone from different regions and negative actions are not allowed, so the atmosphere should not be influenced by rare people.”

Yuen said the Olympic spirit is a philosophy of life and integration of culture, education and sports, which was suggested by Pierre de Coubertin, the father of Olympics. He also brought up the idea that the value of Olympics is not for winning but a process of attending and trying the best. “Everyone should think about the position of community by Olympic spirit and we can benefit from five scopes: fairness, friendship, peace, dignity and glory,” said Yuen.

“Citizens are lack of Civism in Hong Kong. They are always unwilling to yield a seat to elders. In brief, they have four common disadvantages: varnishing own mistakes, criticizing other’s faults, ignoring any justices and exposing another secrets.” Therefore, Olympics is a good chance for Hong Kong to understand more Olympic spirit and review the past for improving Hong Kong’s social values.

To take a glance into the future, there are a lot of challenges of holding Olympics in Hong Kong. “For instance, time is not enough for building facilities, training staffs and promoting to others.” He added that the technical problem is also important for the equestrian events such as electric supply must not stop or time-counting will be unfair and inaccurate.
