On Friday night, the first performance party in Kaohsiung, Taiwan attracted a large number of Han Kuo-yu supporters. It is estimated that 50,000 people participated and many of them said that it was a rare and shocking scene in Kaohsiung in recent years.

Low income and narrow career path made the youth to get a better job in other cities, this situation in Kaohsiung has helped Han Kuo-yu to draw most of the young supporters, said TVBS Executive Deputy Controller.

“Han promised that he would improve the working conditions in Kaohsiung, this was the reason he won the trust of the youngsters,” said Wong Kit Ling at an assembly at Shue Yan University today.

The planned nine-in-one elections on 24 November will select mayors and city councillors in the special municipalities of Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung; county magistrates, mayors, councillors, town chiefs and town representatives in the other 16 counties and county-level cities; and village and ward heads in 22 localities.

The election in Kaohsiung is particularly fierce. Mayor candidates Chan Chi-mai (from the Democratic Progressive Party) and Han Kuo-yu (from Kuomintang) were nip and tuck right to the finish line.

“Han Kuo-yu is a rising star and is bringing hopes for the youngsters. Unlike Ma Ying-jeou, Han is not a good-looking man, he wins people’s hearts by being down-to-earth,” said Wong.

With 25 years of TV news programming experience, Wong started her career as a cable TV editor in Taiwan TVBS. She is currently the Executive Deputy Controller of TVBS news. She was born in Hong Kong and graduated from the Department of Journalism at the Taiwan University of Political Science.

“Kaohsiung people would not want to move to other cities to work, if they have a chance,” said Wong. After 20 years of governance, the Democratic Progressive Party has failed to improve the situation, youngsters started to look for someone to make a change, and that was Han Kuo-yu, said Wong.

“I can’t tell who’s winning the election, the Democratic Progressive Party still got the advantage of the past 20-years governance, it is a neck-and-neck competition,” said Wong.
