Machines replaced factory workers after the Industrial Revolution and now robots with artificial intelligence (AI) will soon replace people in professions, says a big data expert.

Online shopping platform Alibaba decided to use 500 AI robots to work in its customer service section, which cut staff by 4,500 and improved efficiency, said Herbert Chia, a venture partner of Sequoia Capital China, and a former vice-chairman working on data analysis at Alibaba Group.

“If we can expand the knowledge base of AI robots, they will solve customer’s questions smoothly and effectively,” Chia said.

However, AI robots were not able to comfort a customer or ease their bad mood, so “their emotionless replies are sometimes adding fuel to the fire when customers are angry or unsatisfied,” he added.

Chia, who is also president of Youedata Big Data Research Institute, was also sharing his opinion on the use of big data at a Shue Yan University weekly forum.

After applying an analysis of big data, online platforms, social media and search engines will usually send content relevant for users automatically, Chia said.

“But news reporting is the only thing that should never be filtered by the application of big data,” he said.

“If a system filters the news that we see, the top dog in the society will select the news for citizens in order to control our mindset more easily,” Chia said.

“News reporting should not be selective and filtered, citizens should be able to choose the news content freely.”

Chia also worked on big data for online shopping site eBay, online communication platform MSN, HSBC and telecommunications giant PCCW.
