It has been nearly a month since the Hong Kong Economic Journal raised its sale price from $6 to $8, and the executive chief editor, Tim Chan, admitted that the sales volume has decreased a bit, but he believed readers' demand for the newspaper is stable and would not bring much impact to profit.

As the guest speaker for the Hong Kong Shue Yan University’s journalism seminar yesterday, Chan claimed that the drop in sales volume is very normal, “(because) this is the famous ‘Price Theory’, when price increases, demand decreases according. Our sales have dropped a little bit, and I predict it will keep on falling in the near future.”

He admitted that the raise of sale price from $6 to $8, which was an increase of over 30%, might be a bit “aggressive”. However, Tim believed reader's demand for their newspaper is inelastic, which favors the newspaper’s “aggressive appreciation”, “reading our newspaper has become readers’ everyday habit, (I believe) the response towards change in price would not be that huge. It is hard for them to alter their everyday routine.”
