Tim Chan, Executive Chief Editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal, says his paper will be developed as an online version to adapt to changing demands. He was speaking at the general assembly of the Department of Journalism and Communication of Hong Kong Shue Yan University today and talk about the future development of Hong Kong Economic Journal.

He said the increase in price has caused a decrease in the sale. According to the law of demand, loss in consumers is expected as there is a 30% rise in price, from $6 to $8. However, the total revenue may not drop since Hong Kong Economic Journal has its own market with specific reader group.

Although the printed newspaper keeps profit, the fact of the era of the printed newspaper nearly over will not be changed. “The online newspaper will become the main stream in the news industry, therefore Hong Kong Economic Journal decided to move the news platform from paper to website and treated the online version newspaper as the main task of the future development”, said Chan.

At this information age, people are willing to buy the latest financial information, which causes the successes of Hong Kong Economic Journal’s website. As a financial newspaper, Hong Kong Economic Journal has a big market in the online news industry. And Chan believed the online newspaper can attract the young readers.

Besides, readers want the views but not only news and the market is changing to satisfy the demand of reader. “Readers wanted to know what will happen in the market after china government announced to drop the interest rate, and thus experts’ comments were needed. Therefore they should add more point of views in the reporting and this will change the news industry as well as Hong Kong Economic Journal”, Chan explained.
