Hong Kong falls behind in economic and financial news development

One of Hong Kong's leading new editors has expressed disappointment in the development of the city's financial journalism. The Chief Executive Chief Editor of Hong Kong Economic Journal, Tim Chan said "It is far slower than the development of London and American cities.’

Mr Tim Chan shared his point of views on the importance of Economic and Financial News in Hong Kong Shue Yan University with students studying Journalism and Communication yesterday. Compared with the economic and financial news development in London and America, the development in Hong Kong is far too slow, which disappointed him so much. According to Tim, there are media offering professional economic and financial information and news in foreign countries, like London Financial Times, US CNN and The Wall Street Journal. However, there are relative insufficient institutions in Hong Kong, no matter newspaper or television, offering economic and financial news considering Hong Kong as an international and financial center.

He said that forty years ago, there were no newspapers specialized in reporting economic and financial news in Hong Kong, all news related to these aspects were regarded as political news. Until 1973, Hong Kong Economic Journal published which was the first newspaper offering professional economic news. ‘It contained only four to six pages’, memorized Tim Chan.

He further elaborated that the demand of economic and financial reporters is huge in Hong Kong since the financial industry is flourishing and becomes the most important industry in Hong Kong. Thus he encouraged students of Journalism discipline to develop their career in this field. By sharing his own experience, Tim explained that it was not a prerequisite to be sophisticated in financial and economic knowledge for a financial reporter although possessing this knowledge would be an advantage.
