Hong Kong film industry was prosperous during the ’80s to the beginning of the ’90s. However, it is falling since 1993. Even the government-sponsored three films per years, it did not bring a significant growth of to the film industry, a professor emeritus said.

“Hong Kong became a well-known city because of its films” Hong Kong Baptist University, a professor emeritus Cheuck Pad Tong said. 300 films produced every year in the past but now turning to produce 30 films a year since 2016. He said Hong Kong has its unique values to promote to the world through films when the film industry is decreasing, the government had nothing to support.

“What the government did to the subsidy film industry is useless,” he said, ”even they helped 30 films producing it was just 500 thousand spending”. He said the government subsidy to the film industry is not only about producing films, activities which are related to films will also use the money. “I don’t against that money is used to host other activities, but the government has enough money to support films and they didn’t,” he said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University.

Cheuck also said that every era has its own trend, people nowadays should produce films to represent their own trend.

“Film is a cultural product which can be seen by everyone, it has its generation memories,” he said. Since the film is a popular art that exists limitations, new films should be made and belong to the present era.

“Every market has its target audience, a normal and diversity society should include different sounds," Cheuck said, “if society has only one sound, it’s an abnormal place that people don’t want to live”. Even the Hong Kong market is small which has only seven million people, it still has audiences to watch films and will have a variety of films inflow Hong Kong.

“I don’t against Hong Kong directors go to China to develop their career,” he said, “some companies in China like to find Hong Kong directors producing films”. Since the Hong Kong film industry system is complete and has good norms, it is good for directors to go to China after they get used to working in a good environment. “China film industry system is totally different if a director gets used to working in Hong Kong is fine to go to China,” he said, “as they will not be disrupted by a different system”.
