Yeung Cheun Sing Eric, President of Esports Association Hong Kong, said the Hong Kong government has not established licensing mechanism for the e-sports industry. However, Yang revealed that the government will announce a new policy about e-sports in two to three months.

Yeung is co-founder and CEO of Skyzer VC Group. He plays an active role in the IT industry. He is the Chairman of Hong Kong Software Industry Association, Vice Chairman of the Internet Professional Association, Council Member of Hong Kong Computer Society and Hong Kong Information Technology Joint Council.

Yeung explained they are following the ‘Amusement Game Centres Ordinance’ to manage the e-sports venues. However, the ‘Amusement Game Centres Ordinance’ was published 30 years ago which is outdated and old-schooled, especially for the new venues such as e-sports venues.

The police would check our e-sports venues two or three times a week,” Yeung said.

The ordinance stipulates that all commercial video games centres must have the license but the licensing threshold is very high. According to the ordinance, people who are 16 years old or younger cannot enter the games centres. Yeung said it the e-sports venues follow this ordinance, it is impossible for them to develop.

“In recent years, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department has not issued a new game centre license,” Yeung said.

Yeung suggested the Hong Kong government to adjust and renew the Ordinance.

Yeung mentioned that he has reflected the opinions of the industry to the government. As far as he knows, the Government will launch an exclusive management license for the e-sports venues.

Yeung pointed out that the development of industry requires the support of the government.

“Fortunately, there is now the Innovation and Technology Bureau which support the e-sports industry,” Yeung said. Before the Innovation and Technology Bureau established, they even had nowhere to ask for help.
