Hong Kong producers lack social support for documentary films

HONG KONG, NOV 6 – Documentary films are not popular in Hong Kong as most media only focus on profits under fierce competition, whereas RTHK appears to be the only organization that provides full funding for documentary producers.

Ada Li, CNEX Foundation Manager, said that Hong Kong producers have the ability to produce excellent documentary films, but the main problem they are facing is the lack of financial and social support.

As a non-profit films funding organization, CNEX Foundation Limited relies on donations and funding from the Hong Kong Arts Development Council and people who are fond of taking documentary for its daily operation.

“CNEX is not popular enough in Hong Kong as it just started its branch here in 2007, we have been trying our best to arouse people interests in making and watching documentaries these years,” said Li.

CNEX collects proposals from filmmakers who are passionate about Chinese culture and making documentaries in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong every year. Ten ideas will be selected and released to the International Film Festival, for which CNEX will subsidize producers on their productions.

“Documentary not only reflects reality, but it also tightens human relationships and arouses the public for thinking,” said Li.

Li said that the success of “Music and Life”, a Hong Kong Golden Horse Award winning documentary in 2007, showed that Hong Kong producers also have the ability to produce world class documentary films.

She said that CNEX will continue to organize campus screening tours, film festivals and workshops in the coming the year, in order to let more people know about the organization and gain popularity of documentary films production in Hong Kong.
