Hong Kong had to pick up the pace of computer coding learning in education because many countries have started coding education, far beyond Hong Kong, said by a founder of a computer coding company.

“In Korea, children have already learned coding since they were in kindergarten, which surpasses Hong Kong’s education system in this field,” said by Moni Law Yin Ling, the Founder and CEO of ICanCode.

“Meanwhile, coding has been a compulsory course in the US and some European countries, which reflects that coding has become the third common language in this era,” said Law at an assembly at Shue Yan University.

However, Law said Hong Kong was still in a beginning stage on coding education.

“We only have STEM Education (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) at school recently, which is fall behind other countries,” said Law.

She said that STEM education was an innovative approach to learning, which was more teacher-led and compartmentalized, so coding education in Hong Kong was lately developed compared to other countries.

Fortunately, Law said that more and more schools in Hong Kong have realized the importance of STEM education.

“Some colleges even change from customer service to education centres and send their teachers to have training in this field so this is a good turning point,” Law said.

Children also loved the STEM curriculum. By digging in and engaging students what is relevant to their lives and speaks to their interests, schools were able to provide authentic learning experiences that guide students to apply science and engineering practices while developing soft skills such as collaboration, she added.

Some people were questioning that the business model of computer programing education centres might change.

“I believe that it is not a problem because there is always new. We know that technology is changing so schools are learning and we are learning too,” Law said.
