Hong Kong television is losing ground

By Tam Yat Pang

Oct. 9 Managing director of Teledifusão de Macau (TDM), Leong Kam Chun said that Hong Kong television programs will eventually lose ground if Mainland’s broadcasters continue to provide quality programs and receiving high audience ratings.

After the reformation of TDM for more than one year, Hong Kong television programs no longer being monopoly in Macau, and have received only 60% of audience viewing. Leong said that it was not difficult to attract good publicity for TDM since the quality of Hong Kong television programs did not improved a lot in past few years. He added, Hong Kong broadcasters should really beware of the rapidly growth of Mainland’s television programs.

“I have visited Mainland’s broadcast stations and found that all the reporters worked aggressively, unlike Hong Kong’s. It’s because reporters in Mainland could receive bonus as a reward if the news story receive high ratings. Their programs are in good shape since the working environment is competitive and with great intension,” Leong said.

Leong added, Hong Kong television broadcasters should really start to catch up with the new trend in the industry, which is, to develop the “Internet television”. He said, Mainland’s broadcasters no longer take Hong Kong television programs as a threat, because they have worked well and received great audience viewings. “Hong Kong should really take this as a warning, and improved the quality of programs. Otherwise, television broadcast will soon be a sunset industry in Hong Kong,” said Leong.
