Mabel Leung, managing director of MRRM Publishing Limited, said even the market of China was very tempting; she would not launch a mainland version due to various difficulties.

Leung, managing director of MRRM, which published fashion monthlies that cater to affluent readers, said that men fashion magazine needed to expand their market to China to stay competitive. “Owing to the great market potential in China, editors from mainland magazines are treated as VIP in many international fashion shows. Without a Chinese version, Hong Kong magazines would lose their competitiveness,” Leung said.

“Nonetheless, until now, I still cannot assure I can cooperate with a mainland local publisher to handle all the contracts and find means of publication,” Leung said it was difficult for an outsider like her to run a magazine in China.

She further explained that the biggest obstacle for Hong Kong publisher was to manage a local editorial team in mainland. Leung mentioned an example that a Chinese editor received an invitation to attend a fashion show but his boss objected since the sponsor was not their client. Surprisingly, the editor defied his boss’s order and flew to Paris on his own. He even wrote a piece that catered to the sponsor when he came back.

Leung said that the only thing she could do was "expanding the existing platform in Hong Kong". According to Leung, apart from official website, MRRM had also set up electronic version for tablet PC and use social media to publish news.
