Director of Information Services Wong Chi-cho said they are reviewing the ban on online media in covering government events and press conferences.

He emphasised that their department was aimed to facilitate the media in their reporting with no intention of curbing press freedom.

The HK Journalist Asso has earlier lodged a complaint to the Ombudsman Office against a government ban on online media in covering the Legco election counting at the news centre last year. The Ombudsman has ruled in favour of the journalist body.

Speaking to journalism students at Shue Yan University today, Wong said the fast-growing online media might affect the operation of traditional media.

He said they were conducting a review of their policy towards online media. He admitted it was difficult to define online media.

Wong said they put restrictions on online media also because of administrative constraints. The size of the venues like government press conferences and major events was small, he said. He added they have to make sure journalists have enough space to do their job. interview.

On student media, he said they understood journalism students might become journalists in the future.

The department, he said, has already adjusted their policy towards student media since the second half of last year. Student journalists could enter the large press conference such as press conference of policy address on last year September.
