Innovation gives birth to Octopus Card

“Creativity beings with questions, innovation happens when you find answer,” Prudence Chan, CEO of Octopus Holdings Limited quoted her favorite quote and pointed out Octopus Card which brings convenience to people was born in 1997 because of innovation.


“Nowadays, almost 95% of Hong Kong people hold Octopus Card,” Chan stated. “From the recent customer satisfaction survey, it also revealed that 97% customers are content with the usage of Octopus Card.” In the past, people need to use coins or magnetic cards for transportation. The Octopus Holdings Limited saw this as an opportunity to innovate a common fare for all transport, bringing convenience to citizens. “It’s good to see different transport companies, like KMB, Citi bus, MTR, KCR and star ferry can put competition aside and cooperates together, creating a common transport fare for citizens,” Chan explained the birth of Octopus Card. She said the ultimate aim of the Octopus Holdings Limited is to enlighten customers whenever they encounter with Octopus Card.


Apart from being a transport fare, Octopus Card can also be used for telecom payment, Cinema tickets payment, Vending Machines and photo copier transactions. “These days, company wants its employees focusing on customer service, instead of tedious work like money transactions,” Chan explained the phenomenon that Octopus Card is widely used in daily life. “Shops like Wellcome, Market place and Mcdonald also introduce the Octopus reward program,” Chan said , “this can give a rewarding experience to Octopus Card users.”


In order to match the style of different Octopus Card users, the Octopus Holdings Limited has introduced different types of Octopus Card these years. “By making use of some new techniques and our innovation, we’ve introduced a variety of choices to our Octopus Card users,” Chan introduced the Smileys series, mini-octopus series, Hello Kitty series and the limited edition of Octopus Card these years.


“The birth of Octopus Card has highly increased the efficiency of transaction period,” Chan told students that the maximum time of Octopus Card transaction is 3.1 second. Automatic Add Value service is also provided with the birth of Octopus Card, “Customers can also transfer money directly from their credit card to the Octopus Card, $250 or $500 for each transaction and can be done just once per day,” Chan said. She also told that bank has cooperated with the company, and has introduced the Octopus Citibank Credit Card and the DBS Octopus ATM card respectively.”


Asked about the future development of Octopus Card, Chan said the Octopus Card has joined the exhibition in Shanghai World Expo 2010, demonstrating the innovation of Hong Kong. “We also have a joint venture with the Digital China and hope to expand our market in Mainland,” Chan said citizens in Shengzhen can use Octopus Card for payment in some restaurants already. “In this stage, we hope to innovate a mobile with Octopus Card function, people may call it a “nice to have” product,” Chan said.


“True, with innovation, Octopus card exits and makes our life more convenient. Yet, cash is still our main competitor,” Chan said. She hoped Octopus card can replace cash one day.
