What is Instant Messaging?
Group 1: The transmission of an electronic message over a computer network using software that immediately displays the message in a window on the screen of the recipient.[1]
Why uses Instant Messaging but not Email?
Group 1: It provides a real-time communication between two or more people based on typed text. Email also can communicate 1 to 1, or many-to-many communication, however, you don't know whether the other side is using computer or not, receiver may not receive the message immediately.
Difference in Instant Messaging and Face-to-face communication
Group 1: Face-to-face is the most efficient form of communication because participants benefit both from the meaning of the words, as well as the meaning carried by body language, such as gestures and facial expressions.
But instant messaging is only a near real-time exchange of text between two, or more, subscribers. The instantaneous nature of instant messages means sending these messages to and fro is very similar to talking to somebody in person or on the phone. But in a very important respect it is not.
When talking to somebody face to face, you usually do have and can claim the majority of the other person's attention. While exchanging instant messages, you may have the immediate attention only intermittently.
When instant-messaging with somebody, you do not always have the other person's full attention, also cannot readily claim it and should not expect it.
Why does Instant Messaging becoming popular?
Group 1: Instant messaging (IM) became popular after Israeli-based ICQ introduced its service in 1996, which was later acquired by AOL. The major IM services are AOL's Instant Messenger (AIM), ICQ, Yahoo! Messenger, Google Talk, Jabber and Microsoft's incarnations: MSN Messenger, Windows Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.
Features of Instant Messageing Gp 2
Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) is a presence enabled messaging service that aims to transpose the desktop messaging experience to the usage scenario of being on the move. While several of the core ideas of the desktop experience on one hand apply to a connected mobile device, others do not.
Users usually only look at their phone's screen — presence status changes might occur under different circumstances as happens at the desktop, and several functional limits exist based on the fact that the vast majority of mobile communication devices are chosen by their users to fit into the palm of their hand.
