Internet users should understand the setting of Internet tools to protect their privacy

Harry Hui,Founder, Smark Global (Holdings) Ltd,attended an assembly at SYU on Tuesday talking about "right to be forgotten” issue. He agreed that Hong Kong should implement “right to be forgotten”, which could protect the internet users’ privacy.

Harry Hui said, many internet users were being analyzed by Google when they were surfing the Internet. They did not protected by law and their privacy were exposed. Hui said, the proposed law of “right to be forgotten” in Europe was good, however, this would sacrifice convenient and the service which suitable for ourselves.

“Big data era brings convenient to citizens, but citizens should understand the functions of the tools in the internet in order to protect their privacy.”, said Harry Hui. Hui took WhatsApp as a example, Since WhatsApp was purchased by Facebook, the data of WhatsApp was linked to Facebook. If the users did not cancel the linking, Facebook would use the data as analyzes. Hui said, if the users want to protect their privacy, they should spend time to understand the setting of application and Internet tools.

At present, information about the activities of internet users such as their search records are being collected and analysed by Google and other internet companies. As there is now no law to put restriction on such access, the privacy of internet users is under no protection.

Speaking at xxxx, Lui said it is good thing for HK to follow the EU to allow netizens to have the right to choose whether they want their personal data be available to others.

He noted that this could mean the users might not be able to enjoy convenience in getting information such as market promotion materials from social media.

"The Big Data era brings convenience to netizens. But they should know the functions of digital tools to protect their privacy."
