Lam Cheung Wai, Founding President of Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, expressed that the policies for the disabled in Hong Kong still has a long way to go.

Speaking from Hong Kong Shue Yan University, Lam agreed that the rehabilitation services and facilities for the disabled did made a lot of progress than ten years before. “Back in the days, MTR didn’t allow to get on the train and there was no low floor bus, and only one-sided slope for wheelchair users to use, in which they couldn’t go down on the other side of the footbridge. But now everywhere has lifts for them.”

However, Lam said policy and arrangements of Rehabus still remain stagnant for years. “After all, government is a bureaucratic structure. It takes at least three to five years for improvements and requires lots of subsidies.” He hoped the services of Rehabus will increase soon.

Lam believed the propose of transportation coupons would alleviate problems of disabled people in accessing, including barrier-free taxi.
