Ivan M.W. Yau:’’Emotional control is the key to a successful reporter.’’
Senior journalist Ivan M.W. Yau attend the Hong Kong Shue Yan University today, saying that journalists must control and repress their emotion no matter how worst the case is.
Yau recalled his most unforgettable accident is, the fire broke out in Garley Building on November 1996, caused 41 deaths and 81 injuries. Yau was sent to report the news on that day.
“It is an unforgettable day for me, there were many dead bodies hanging on the windows, and people cried for help. As a human being, it was very hard to control my emotion,’’ said Yau.
Yau said as a reporter, control his compassion and sadness is a must, in order to make professional judgments.
“I must make up my mind and get my work done. But it was very hard to control my emotion while seeing those horrify sense.”
To be a successful journalist or reporter, he concluded, “patience, good attitude and persistence are the keys to be a successful journalist and reporter.”
