James Pomfret has reported for Reuters since 2006, first as Hong Kong Correspondent, then as South China Correspondent for Money, Political and General News. Besides writing for the text service, he is a regular contributor to Reuters Television news and Reuters Insider television. He has a multimedia background in television and radio.

Pomfret has spent the greater part of his career reporting on Hong Kong and Greater China. For Reuters, he specializes in political and general news, along with trade and economic issues in the South China region, including coverage of the export powerhouse of the Pearl River Delta region. He also writes on Macau’s gaming sector and monetary issues in Hong Kong including the red-hot growth of the city’s offshore yuan settlement market.

Fluent in the region’s Cantonese language, as well as Mandarin Chinese, Pomfret reporting through the years has included the SARS outbreak in Hong Kong and Beijing, the 2008 Olympics, World Cup in South Korea, G20 summit, the ASEAN summit, Taiwan presidential elections, Beijing’s NPC/CPPCC sessions, Asian art and Hong Kong politics. He explored telling shifts to China’s export manufacturing, trade and labour landscape through a series of in-depth special reports. Prior to Reuters, Pomfret worked as a producer at CNBC Asia, a television reporter for TVB News and a reporter/presenter for RTHK radio in Hong Kong. Pomfret was educated in Hong Kong’s KGV school, attended Southampton University in the U.K. and has a Masters degree from HKU.
