HKSYU, 10 Oct - The TV industry in Macau struggled because of the domination of neighboring Hong Kong television, but that can be changed, said João Leong Kam Chun, chairman of the executive committee of Teledifusão de Macau , at Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday.

In the past few years, Leong said, Macau people increasingly watched TVB or ATV rather than TDM because of the popular Hong Kong drama serials. To recapture viewership, Leong decided to focus on local news soon after he assume office. He said that every community needs its local news.

He started strengthening the news team by buy new cameras, employing more journalists and cameramen, even drivers. Besides news, TDM would produce some tidbits to entertain the audience.

After the reforms, Leong was surprised to find that the audience rating gap between TVB and TSD in Macau reduced to 14% through the rating survey.

Leong added that TVB, ATV and other Hong Kong TV stations should have sense of crisis and also make improvements because more young people are turning to the internet for videos. They choose to watch drama serials online when they are free, bored or cannot fall asleep. He also said the competition in Mainland China is pretty intense. Mainland stations get audience rating from STB (Set Top Box), and publicise the top program and the last one. That creates a competitive environment that helps inspire the staff to make better grograms.

However, Leong doesn't think audience rating is the only standard to measure the success of a program. He is grateful that TDM is not a commercial TV station. As a result, they can produce more videos on social justice. "Is it suitable for children to watch cartoons with violence? If I can make the decision, I would ban it," said Leong.
