Our closing neighbor Macau, their local television industry is going a peaceful reform. João Leong Kam Chun, the chairman of the Teledifusão de Macau SA (TDM) executive committee, said he was intending to break the habit of Macanese TV-watching sequence, that is watching TVB and ATV first, and TDM is their third choice in a local university assembly yesterday.

Leong pointed out that the reform do not need to lay off. Based on the local demand for the local news,TDM strengthened their manpowers and other resources, created the news station combo of news and information, and hoped to chase the Hong Kong competitors.

The chairman has served in TMD for 19 months, well aware that the Hong Kong colleagues is a monopoly of TV market in Macau. He mentioned that TMD would not do any TV ratings survey in the past, as they fear the shutdown of their company if TMD received a zero ratings. As to survive, he realized that Hong Kong television rarely covers Macau local News, suggested and pushed the development of the local community news as to save TDM, thus he carried out a series of reforms.

He said the TMD reform including the increase in manpower and equipment, hiring more drivers and a young cameraman, buying multiple advanced video recorders; Secondly, they provided more opportunities to reporters for overseas interview, as to encourage them to gather gossip outside the news, the gossip could be the life of foreign overseas Chinese and culture; Thirdly, they added internal strengthening training for employees. Also, internal promotion was looking ability than seniority, as to speed up the promotion of younger colleagues.

Now, he was satisfied with the effect of the reform. He said the information-type news station is welcome by the audience. In 2011, they carried out the ratings survey. They found out the TDM news station was only 14 percent behind their biggest rival TVB. He acknowledged there is still a distance from Hong Kong, however, the survey brought inspiration and social affirmation to their peers, changing their decadent state. The institutionalized framework of the company enhanced healthy competition between the peers

Leong said the TMD is currently a growth stage, only 112 employees of the Department of Public Information, they are not been able to set up a 24-hour news channel. He promised to reduce the information content of the news stationsas, as the people of Macao build up the sense of social responsibility. For the future, he predicted the television is bound to become the program suppliers. "Internet" will be the final place to determine the victory between the TVs.
