Oct 9th—It’s time to reform both Hong Kong and Macau’s TV stations, if not, they will be in danger of losing their competitive edge to the mainland, said Joana Leong Kam Chun, executive chairman of Teledifusao de Macau S.A.

“We had faced pressure from TVB and ATV, and there were few Macau people who would like to watch local TV. At that time, we were afraid of making rate survey, for the sake of preventing our heart from being broken,” Leong said.

Since Leong became the executive chairman of Teledifusao de Macau S.A. last year, he began to make innovations. Besides purchasing more technical equipment and hiring more staff, Leong also switched the television station’s goal to Consultative station—that is, make its focus on the local news.

Firmly convinced that “local people are interested in watching local news”, Leong gradually put the TV station’s main focus on local news. Together with his team, Leong added some non-news contents such as regional culture, local features into the report as well, making the news more appealing to draw attention. The results turned out to be successful: a survey showed that the difference in ratings between TVB and Teledifusao de Macau is about 14%. “It is already beyond our expectation, we estimated the difference would over 80%,” Leong added.

When asked why he turned the station into an information station rather than a pure news channel, Leong said TDM still has a long way to go. It is not the time for the station to become a pure news channel, he said. “Just like you cannot pretend to be a strong man when you are only a kid,” Leong said. He also promised that this "information" focus would not lower the station’s news quality.

Although Macau has started to reform, Leong also mentioned that the atmosphere of competing in both Hong Kong and Macau was not that tense compared with mainland. “Fierce competition would result in progress,” Joan said, “Hong Kong TV station should also considered to make some innovations, otherwise it would fall behind with other areas’ program.”
