Director of Information Services Wong Chi-cho said there was no restriction on the freedom of information. The ban on few online news media during the 2016 Legislative Council Election was aimed to prevent any chaos.

Wong explained at a student assembly at HKSYU on Tuesday that online media was fast-growing and is hard to define what is online news media as everyone could be a reporter with an electronic equipment. He said there were lots of problem to be solved during the press conference. For example, the press venue at the west wing of Central Government Offices was big as a basketball court only and it was hard to allow all media to get in as it might happen chaos.

Wong added that mass media were the first priority during press interviews and it was hard to let student media to attend in all press conferences. He understood that students needed opportunities for training as a professional reporter, therefore student media would be permitted to get in if the venue was available and the issue was related to public interest.
