The spokesperson of Alliance for True Democracy said that it is very difficult for a non-democratically elected government to activate social reform and gain public acceptability.

Alliance for True Democracy is a coalition of 12 pan-democratic groups to fight for universal suffrage in Hong Kong. The spokesperson Joseph Cheng Yu-shek was invited to attend an academic talk in Hong Kong Shue Yan University yesterday. The topic of the talk was “The mission of Alliance for True Democracy and fight for universal suffrage”.

Cheng said that a non-democratically elected government was difficult to gain public acceptability because it is always failed to handle important issues about people’s livelihoods. For example, during Donald Tsang’s government era, once Tsang suggested broadening the tax base but finally he failed. CY Leung also failed to set up a Technology Bureau. Cheng thought that all those can prove the failure of a non-democratically elected government to activate a social reform and response the public need.

Cheng added that the government should respect the public opinion. Even though the government had certain policies which were not popular among the public, it can still persuade the public to accept. “Maybe the government’s polling result is bad, but the government should carry on promoting the valuable policies due to the social responsibility.” said Cheng. “The most important thing is to gain support from the public with a thorough explanation.”--115038 2013年10月24日 (四) 00:22 (UTC)
