Joseph Yau: broaden tax base is the future of HK

The president of The Taxation Institute of Hong Kong said at the lecture of Shue Yan University yesterday that the suggestion of collecting tax for entering Hong Kong was workable but not aimed at mainland Chinese.

Joseph Yau, The President of The Taxation Institute of Hong Kong, said the suggestion of collecting tax from people entering Hong Kong from land route was workable as it can broaden the base of tax collection. "There were fifty-four million tourist to Hong Kong. If we collect ten dollars from each, we will have five billions." Joseph emphasised it was not aim at Chinese and need to consider the effects on retails and tourists.

Joseph said lots of countries had introduced sales tax. "Japan's sales tax was the largest income for its state,"said Joseph "People needs purchasing, You guys go Japan as there are sales tax!" He is not scaring that the sales tax will affect the retail industry.
