Journalism has good future, despite decline of printed media

Tim Chan, the executive chief editor of the Hong Kong Economic Journal says that although printed media is in decline, he is optimistic about the development of journalism as a profession.

Tim gave his speech during the general assembly organized by Hong Kong Shue Yan University and said he stands on the side that printed media is sunset industry. He says that it is unusual to see people reading newspaper on the MTR nowadays. Instead, they have their smart phones, allowing them to see what is happening around the world at the touch of their fingertips.

Although Tim agrees that printed media is facing great challenges, he thinks journalism will have a good future as the demand for news and information is increasing recently. “People just read newspaper in the morning and watch TVB news at 6:30 in the old days”, said Tim. Nowadays, we are receiving information from social media such as Facebook whenever we surf the net. He also pointed out through which channel to get information is not important at all, it is more important to fulfill what people want to receive.</div> |}
