Journalist’s Vital Tool – Relationship

If Cheng Ping Wah, the executive editor of Singtao Daily has to be asked about the vital tool to write up news, his answer must be, “it’s all about relationship.”
He explained that having a strong bond among colleagues and potential cooperators is absolutely important. “Even for a beggar at the roadside, you never know if he can be the first-hand witness of an accident,” Cheng added. That is why he is so keen on hanging out with politician friends, even if he has to spend lots of money every time. He further explained his belief, “They can always help me to create a noise in the council; to draw the government attention to certain issues.”
When Cheng was working in Apple Daily, he had been involved in an investigation about a chain store selling suspicious pork. He first knew about this from a market pork seller after their conversation one day. And with the proof from the chain store staff, his reporting sources became persuasive and trustworthy. From this, Cheng drummed in the importance of maintaining good interpersonal network as a reporter.
