A photojournalist said that journalist should only crop the sizes and adjust the rightness of news photos by using Photoshop.

Ringo Chiu, freelance photojournalist at Associated Press, said that journalist can use the Photoshop to edit photos since it can edit photos quickly. "But journalist should edit news photos by Photoshop as same as edit photos in traditional darkroom,” Chiu said. He said that journalist only can crop the size and adjust the lightness of the news photos.

He also pointed out his story about making a mistake on editing the news photo in the past. “One of my forest fire news photos was be rejected to be posted on the newspaper since I added a little red color on the forest fire of this photo.”

Comment:

Media owners put private business interest ahead of the press’s watchdog role, leading to significant deterioration of press freedom over the past years, renowned photojournalist Ringo Chui said.

Chui, whose photojournalism career spans three decades and crosses major news media outlets in Hong Kong and the US, believes pressure from mainland companies made the city’s media unable to report freely.

“Hong Kong is getting increasingly similar to the mainland, while Shanghai is increasingly westernised,” he said.
