Journalists Do Not Predict

By Jacob Lo

David Schlesinger, the chairman of Thomson Reuters China emphasized that journalists should not predict the future but to watch and analysis the news while attending Hong Kong Shue Yan University as a guest speaker.

Concerns grew over the freedom of speech will be restricted after C. Y. Leung has been nominated to be the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Schlesinger is asked to predict the future of Hong Kong. However, he refused to judge it since he thought that reporters should make no predictions.

“As a reporter, our job is to analysis and question about the issue, but not predicting the future.” Schlesinger said.

Schlesinger added that journalists in the past drafted the history. The history was how they reported and recorded. Nowadays ordinary people witnessed the happening of every event. The importance of journalists shifted to adding value and analyzing the news rather than simply reporting it.

Schlesinger was having his last few moments in Thomas Reuters as he was going to quit it on August. He will start his own business which provides research, analyzing and expertise of media.
