Journalists should be careful of using social network

“I would not make any statement or speech online as representing my company, unless it is an absolute right or wrong issue,” Sino Group Corporate Communications Assistant General Manager Ivan Yau, a former reporter in TVB, discourage that lots of reporters have own blogs to write something about backstage reporting nowadays.“Journalists should be careful when they are using social network, such as Facebook, Weibo and Twitter.”

Yau attended an assembly of Hong Kong Shue Yan University today, he advised the students that being a reporter should not always show their own view of news online. He said sharing own feelings online is no right or wrong, but he would not share his private daily life as well as political view online. “Internet is a public space, so everyone should think carefully before posting any comment publicly online, especially journalists,” he added.

Prof. Leung Tin Wai, the head of Journalism and Communications department agreed with Yau and told the students that commenting about news issues or criticizing their companies on web is immoral.“Any comments given by reporters are representing the media companies they work for, ” said Leung. [This adequately explains why journalists need to be particularly careful.]
