【13th October, 2015 Ellen Wong】New media tries to offer high salary to attract new blood. Ko Kim-ching, Planning Editor of i-CABLE News Limited, thought it is normal for new media paying high salary as they had to recruit talents in order to raise their popularity.

HK01 and Initium Media set HKD$15000 as the salary starting point for fresh graduates. ‘Different media uses different offers to attract talents,’ Ko said. He used sponge as a metaphor for fresh graduates entering traditional media, saying that graduates could engage more aspects in work comparatively, like a sponge absorbs water all the time. Ko believed the recent salary HKD$12000 in i-CABLE was a reasonable start point. He added, salary should not be a problem for choosing a job, instead, ability should be.

It’s the general trend to provide free television channels for audience. Ko said, i-CABLE did not have the plan to transform into free media in the current stage, but part of the i-CABLE TV program was uploaded to web. He explained, transforming into free media would affect the current subscribers of i-CABLE, therefore, it should plan under careful deliberations.

Expanding the market to the social media platform, Ko clarified, i-CABLE did not aim to snatch subscribers from other media. He said, i-CABLE would use different techniques of expression to present its news.
