LAW FAN Chiu-fun, a member of the Executive Council, pointed out that it is important for government to support the development of the six new industries, which aim to broaden Hong Kong’s economic structure.

In 2009, the last Chief Executive Donald Tsang stressed the need for Hong Kong to develop the six new industries, namely education services, cultural and creative industries, medical services, innovation and technology, testing and certification services and environmental industries.

Despite of the rapid growth,LAW said, “the proportion of the six industries is still minor.” The value added of the six industries expressed as percentage to Gross Domestic Product (GDP) was no more than 10%. She thought there was a lack of complete sets and that became the bottleneck for their long-term growth.

In addition, LAW said the six industries are moving in the right direction, but she also agreed that government needed to formulate policies in order to improve six industries instead of just shouting slogans.
