【3rd December, 2013 Leung Nga Wing】Chairman of Lantau Development Alliance (LDA) Allen Ha said it is important for Hong Kong government to seize the opportunity in developing Lantau so as to boost and sustain Hong Kong’s economy, as well as to alleviate poverty and employment problem in Tung Chung.

As noted by Ha, Hong Kong is primarily facing the problem of land shortage and lack of diversity in types of industry. To tackle the problem, LDA suggested the government to develop Lantau, and transform it into a new tourism and MICE (meetings, incentives, conferencing, exhibitions) economic zone.

“MICE industry is developing at a very fast pace in recent years. For tourists who come to Hong Kong to attend conference or exhibition, they usually possess higher consumption power. Therefore, we suggest the government to target this group of tourist for boosting and enhancing the economy in Hong Kong,” Ha said.

Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge would soon be completed in 2016. Lantau is thus considered to be the most beneficial and important hub for business, tourism and MICE industry in Hong Kong. Ha said the government needs to seize the opportunities in developing Lantau, so that such development could be conducive to Lantau (including Tung Chung) residents and its local economy.

He also urged the government to quickly improve the transportation network in Lantau for supporting future development and increasing among of visitors.

The Alliance concerns not merely Hong Kong’s overall development, but it also concerns the local issue of Lantau. Ha mentioned that Tung Chung was ranked as the poorest district in Hong Kong, and the Alliance noticed that its local labour resource was wrongly allocated. “This is not only about the problem of unemployment, but it is about the problem of resources allocation,” said Ha.

He added that residents in Tung Chung need to travel a long way to other districts for work; while people hired by companies stationed in Tung Chung need to travel far form other districts and come here for work. Ha said such circumstance is neither beneficial to Hong Kongers nor the environment.

The Lantau Development Alliance is co-established by various enterprises and local groups in Lantau, for instance like Hong Kong Disneyland, Ngong Ping 360, AsiaWorld-Expo, Cathay Pacific etc. Its major goals include boosting the local economy, creating job opportunities and mitigating poverty problem in Lantau area.

In the past year, LDA has worked closely with the government in promoting the development of Lantau and Tung Chung area. The Alliance has also actively communicated with different stakeholders, media and general public, and it hopes that society could achieve a consensus on the issue.
