Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, Secretary for Labour and Welfare, said the wages of reporters should be improved and raised due to difficulties of the job.

Cheung replied to the questions of reporters’ salary in a sharing session at Hong Kong Shue Yan University. He said media work is so important to the development of Hong Kong, that reporters should gain a more reasonable salary.

“Like the social issue aroused in Tin Shui Wan before, media reported the residents' meeting held by our department which led to social attention,” Cheung said.

He appreciates that reporters specializing in breaking news like the Wen Chuan earthquake always accrue high levels of both body and mind fatigue.

He added that freedom of speech allowed reporters to achieve the role of supervisors and of monitors in order to strengthen the transparency of government.
