The new free-to–air television channel City Telecom has suspiciously lured nearly half of the experienced scriptwriters away from TVB. Lai Man Cheuk said it might not seriously affect TVB .

“There are a total of 1,800 staff at TVB, and some of human resources who have been lured away by CTI counted for only 5% of TVB’s total number of employees, which is the normal staff turnover. Therefore, it would not affect the operation of TVB,” Lai said at Shue Yan University

Lai said that in years ago, people in mainland like to watch Hong Kong dramas because of its good production. However, with the progress of the mainland TV industry, the TV production in mainland is becoming much better and very close to the world Level.

“Although domestic television production is good, there is still a lack of good scriptwriters. In Hong Kong, a television drama scriptwriter can usually get HK$12,000 for one episode, but on the Mainland, scriptwriters can get a startup salary 2.5 times higher than those in Hong Kong. As a result, it’s a good choice for local scriptwriters to try the Mainland market,” he said.

The election of the chief executive is around the corner. Henry Tang, one of the candidates, was failure in handling the recent political scandals, which has aroused great repercussion. “It was not all his fault,” Lai said, “Because the politics is still not mature in Hong Kong. We still rest on the stage of kindergarten and have more space to improve,” Lai said.

“I think Leung Chun-ying is much more mature in handling political problems than Henry Tang.”
