The chairman of Lantau Development Alliance called on the government to alleviate Tung Chung and North Lantau’s poverty by developing the district’s tourism on Tuesday.

Lantau Development Alliance’s Chairman Allen Ha Wing-on quoted earlier findings that Tung Chung’s poverty rate is highest in Hong Kong, surpassing the traditional poorest district of Shum Shui Po and Yuen Long. He attributed the employment mismatch in the district as the cause.

“Lantau’s corporate were unconsciously hiring people from other districts causing an employment mismatch,” Ha continued, “this is unsustainable as the cost of this mismatch is too high.”

Ha explained that corporates on the island are now aware of the mismatch, and are taking the initiative to hire more locals.

As the government is planning on the second stage development of Tung Chung, Ha believed that developing the district’s tourism, hotel and service sector is the most feasible way to reduce the district’s shortage on jobs.

“Tourism requires more people to work comparing to our overly-large financial sector. The education requirement for these jobs are much lower as well,” Ha said.

Tung Chung, a town that is only a 10 minutes drive from Hong Kong International Airport, is described by Ha as not living up to its potential. He said Tung Chung could be a top-notch exhibition and tourism center like Santosa in Singapore, given the right direction of development from the government.

The Lantau Development Alliance is founded by enterprises and local groups in Lantau, including by not limited to, AsiaWorld-Expo, Hong Kong Disneyland, Dragages Hong Kong and Ngong Ping 360.
