Instead of providing high value-added services, Lantau Island is planning to develop meeting, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) services at three-star price, said Allen Ha, the chairman of Lantau Development Alliance.

Owing to the launch of individual visit scheme in 2003, the related industries such as catering and retailing industry are flourishing with the soaring number of mainland visitors. However, in recent years, Hong Kong concentrates the tourist development along the Central Business District, together with the multiple increases in individual visitors, the ability to absorb so many tourists has reached a bottleneck.

Ha said that in order to optimize and sustain tourism, Lantau Island is planning to strive for MICE visitors and provide related service at three-star price. The re-planned Lantau Island will target middle class visitors, so that different tourist districts in Hong Kong will not directly compete for the same target customers. Lantau Island, in this case, may help to divert tourist attractions, Ha added.

Some may argue that the existing outlet plaza in Tung Chung is flooded with high-priced brand which cannot meet the local residents’ needs. Ha explained Lantau Development Alliance place much emphasis on increasing facilities for locals. He hope the future MICE re-developed Lantau Island can also boost local employment.
