Local audiences afraid of being on TV

Although reality shows are popular, Hong Kong TV stations almost buy those programmes from foreign TV channels rather than produce on their own.

In Hong Kong, two famous local reality shows "The Voice" and "Asian Millionstar" are all singing contests, but the categories of the shows in American are much various, such as "Queer Eye", "The Apprentice" and "America's Next Top Model" are related to male makeover, business management and models respectively.

"This is because of our local culture," said Ho Lai Chuen, TV & New Media's Executive Vice President and General Manager of Production of now TV, as a talk to Hong Kong Shue Yan University students yesterday. "Compared with the Mainland China and Taiwan, Hong Kong audiences are so shy to be on TV."

"We tried to produce a local dating game show few years ago, but we discovered the male participants are more timid than the female," Ho continued. "Maybe it is related to the limited space of Hong Kong, it is very easy to be recognized and teased after getting embarrassed in the show."

Ng Yu, the media professional, also supplemented that although the production of reality shows China starts much later than Hong Kong, the rules of the game shows are much interesting.
