Loh Chan: Just and fair make media creditable

by Qianning Huang

After a war between the shareholders, DBC (Digital Broadcasting Corpotation) adjusted its personnel and returned to its normal broadcasting in January, and the new C.E.O. Loh Chan said its news channel would stay fair and unbiased.

Loh, who attended the General Assembly in Shue Yan University, said the development of digital broadcasting was with the trend of social media and had the confidence of attracting the original FM and AM audiences. In his words, the digital broadcasting has already covered 80% of the population and will get more signal emitters built in 12 tunnels in 2014. He also list the advantages of digital broadcasting as less noice, more convenient to choose channel and the quality can be compared to CD’s. An opion poll in America call ‘Where people get news yesterday’ shows that most of readers get news online or from their mobile phone. In this case, Loh Chan said DBC would continue to develop the applications for mobile phones. To attrack more people, Loh Chan said DBC would delivered 2,000 radios for the bus and taxi drivers and give some radios for the elderly almost for free, and some of the money wil be afforded by some organizations and DBC.

This is the first time for Loh Chan to join radio broadcasting. Although it’s a different aspect, Loh Chan thinks that the content is the same in different format of media. And he said, as a journalist, one should always keep just and fair. Some will worry that the biggest shareholder, Huang guobiao is a member of CPPCC(Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference), his identity will affect the freedom of news editting in DBC. According to this, Loh Chan stated that, to avoid suspicion, Huang will only appear as an investor, which will not have any influences to the newsroom. And he quoted a saying of Huang said,“We will not be the <DaGong>, but we won’t be the <Apple Daily> also”. Loh echoed audiences to listen to DBC, and welcome different suggestions. He also believed that audiences have their own judgement, as long as media and journalists remain just and fair in reporting.
