Famous stage actor Joey Leung has around four drama performances every year since he graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 2001. He said that with different kinds of performances, he understands what Chung King Fai, another famous actor in Hong Kong, told him in APA before, that all dramas are about love.

He said that Chung’s statement have guided him in producing popular dramas. He understand that no matter what form of art they are, they are all about love. It can be about love within a family, lovers or even love towards the environment. After many performance experiences, he realized that the core of drama production is love. Some dramas only focus on jokes or sex rather than love. Leung said that those dramas will not last because dramas should be carrying out a message and create resonance with the audience.

He stated that a drama concentrates people’s relationships and love within a story. Audiences are able to feel these feelings in the drama, gaining a new understanding and a new vision toward the world and everything around them. From his point of view, the meaning of drama is to convey a message to the audience, hoping that can make their lives better. He hopes that audiences can have both entertainment and receive a message while watching their dramas.

One of Leung’s famous dramas is the Queer Show, performed in 2004. The show has been performed 5 times within 8 years and still gains much audience support. He stated that homosexuality is definitely a good topic for drama. He further explained that obstacles are a key element in a drama, however, it is hard to find serious obstacles for love stories except for homosexuality. He said that homosexuals feel it is impossible to bring their partners back home to meet their parents, which is different from heterosexual relationships. However, he explained that the Queer Show actually is does not place emphasis on the topic of homosexuality, but is rather about the nature of love. He added that the topic of homosexuality is huge, that it is not common to produce a drama that only emphasizes on a specific point of homosexuality.

“No style is our style”, this is how Leung positioned his drama group Windmill Grass Theatre. Unlike some other famous drama groups, Windmill Grass Theatre has no characteristics to differentiate themselves from other groups. He said that the government has given out funds to encourage the development of local drama groups every year. However, resources are usually allocated to large scale groups that have strong characteristics. Leung stated that they have no characteristics as he would like to perform different kinds of dramas. He said that there will be no improvement if they only perform a particular kind of drama. Therefore they prefer to receive no funds from government rather than go against their principle of drama production.
