Jack Forest, editorial director of Timesquare (Hong Kong) Co Ltd, said at Hong Kong Shue Yan University that luxury magazines are still stable financially because of loyal readers.

Forest said that the market of luxury magazines is not great, but for specific customers. He stated that they tend to be stable, even if the general market [of printed media] deteriorates. He said that the living space of luxury magazines can still maintain well while the sales volumes of Apple Daily and Oriental Daily, which are two of the most popular local newspapers, has been dropped sharply.

There may be some hardships for luxury magazines. He also said that the compromise with advertisement clients is the greatest difficulty for Hong Kong media industry. He revealed that working for magazines have to co-operate with advertisements if you do not want your boss face bankrupt.

He stated that readers’ tastes are different in Hong Kong, Taiwan and mainland China, for example, the versions of Taiwan and mainland China are filled with words, while the one of Hong Kong involves half of them. He said that writing magazines with Taiwan or mainland China style will sacrifice the market in Hong Kong.

To respond the questions about the mobilization of teenagers in Hong Kong, he stated that the competitions nowadays have been greater. He mentioned that the challenges Hong Kong teenagers are facing are not only from the same age level, but maybe the older generations. He said that the old generations now refuse to leave.

“Don’t ask others how to see yourself, but how you see your own efforts. I now still believe that you must have opportunities in Hong Kong, if you really pay efforts.” said Forest.
