HONG KONG PUBLISHER SAYS CULTURAL DIFFERENCES HINDER MAINLAND DEVELOPMENT

Managing Director of MRRM says the greatest challenge in developing a China version of the magazine is the working style and culture between Hong Kong and the mainland are too different.

Mabel Leung, the managing director of MRRM Publishing LTD, which is a local fashion and style magazine, indicated that China has increasing effects to the international field of fashion. “When our editors are invited to the fashion shows in Milan and Paris, the editors from mainland are always arranged a front sit,” said Leung, “that’s why we plan to have a China version to benefit Hong Kong version as well,”

However, Leung found this is a challenge to the magazine. She started to communicate with the mainland publisher twenty years ago but still does not dare to cooperate with them. “There have been so many failures because the local labor is not manageable, even the fresh graduates,” said Leung. She cites a Shanghai local editor as an example who was invited by a company to Paris to attend a fashion show. “But the publisher found it would not benefit either the publisher nor the audience so this trip was rejected,” said she, “but that editor still went that trip and wrote an eel article,”

As MRRM found that the Hong Kong style of working cannot suit China’s labor, it decided to focus on the development of Hong Kong business.
