With the population of 570,000 persons, Macau is now trying to direct local residents’ sight at local TV news from the superior Hong Kong counterpart.

’We were afraid of conducting an audience rating survey before the television news reform. However, we are not now,’ said Joao Leong Kam Chun, Chairman of Teledifusão de Macau (TDM)’s Executive Committee. In connection with the desires to Hong Kong news of Macau people, the development of local news platform was limited in a very long time, before the ongoing TDM reform undertaking by Leong.

The reform is focusing to report the soft news and tidbits of the out-of-town news events while reporting the serious news, like introducing the Confucius Institute in Russia and scooping the tidbits during the 2012 Olympic Games. ‘Local residents have found interest and value on those tidbits. That is our way out to attract locals to watch the local TV news,’ Leong explained. What is more, TDM has also changed the ‘TDM Life’ channel to ‘TDM Information’ channel to explore more news information to locals. ‘TDM information’ will soon change to ‘TDM News’, aims at gradually making news reporting every hour. The difference between the rating points of watching Macau TV news and Hong Kong news narrowed to 14% now. ‘News channel is the soul of a TV station and a better news reform can revive the TV stations in Macau,’ Leong believes.
