Macau's undeveloped television industry has struggled to find a solid base, said Leong Kam Chun, chairman of the Executive Committee of association of TDM (Teledifusao De macau).

Leong thinks local news could be the answer for TDM. “People should focus on local news,“ said Leong. He said that compared to Hong Kong, local news is rare in Macau, because there are fewer protests, accidents or even suicide there. Leong added it is also related to the undeveloped broadcasting field.

Although the Macau government does not put pressure on TV stations, Leong said programs and news tend to be more conservative and independent, as journalists rarely raise their voice and point out controversial issues.

Leong believed it is because of the culture difference between Hong Kong and Macau. With a greater freedom of speech and channels for broadcasting in Hong Kong, TV stations, like Television Broadcasting Company Limited (TVB), tend to report more truths and social events to the public. Those TV companies have taken a leading role for decades, even in Macau.

Leong believed that there is a market for developing local and international news in Macau. But, he said, “We are in a critical situation, journalists here have gun but without bullets,” Leong said. By that, he means that Macau does not have enough equipment and resources for journalists. And with the lack of experienced journalists, it is a barrier for Macau broadcasting system to launch a more advanced and solid base. Leong believed that TDM needs time to build up a more solid base by including more varieties of news, like financial news.
