The mysterious Teledifusão de Macau(TDM), which is aggressively expanding, filming new programs and narrowing the ratings gap between HK's broadcasting company, no longer regards TVB as an “undefeatable rival”, said João Leong, Chairman of Executive Committee of the company.

Macau has heavily relied on imported TV programs from Hong Kong, but this was changed. Recently the ratings of TVB and TDM in Macau was measured around 60% and 40% respectively, with a gap of 14%, according to Leong.

Leong gives credit for TDM's success to the news department. He knew that every citizen needs to watch local news, which can never be imported, therefore about two years ago he invested in developing the press crew, raising staff's salaries, acquiring new equipment and training the reporters. “We can't keep losing because we always lost,” said Leong.

“We hadn't dared to measure the ratings since we thought it must be a massacre,” Leong said, seeing the new success as a milestone for the broadcasting company.

Leong believed the quality of the TV programs on the mainland has caught up with TVB's, due to the extreme pressure. “In mainland, every day the names of the programs with the highest rating and the lowest rating are posted, with directors' names, in front of the gate,” he said, adding that Asia's affection for Hong Kong TV was fading.
