As Macau develops its media industry, the chairman of public broadcaster Teledifusao De Macau, S.A, said TDM is lucky, because it is not following the way of China.

As a government-funded media organization, TDM is free from financial pressures. “We are lucky we do not need to be concerned about commercial ads,” Leong said at a talk on Tuesday at Shue Yan University.

He said the practice used in the TV stations in China is harsh, listing out the top and lowest programs every day. “TDM can have its own way,” he said.

Leong cites RTHK as an examples. “RTHK's programs are high quality and cover local society,” Leong said, adding that RTHK is similar to TDM - both are not influenced by commercial ads.

In response to critics who doubt the independence of TDM from its government owners, Leong pointed out that they are completely independent and free. However, some media would still regard TDM as conservative.

Leong explained why TDM is seen as relatively conservative. Macau is a small city with a small population, he said. “Even when I talk to another woman, my wife would know!“ he said. With such a unique geographical location, people get to know and judge things in their ways. Due to the difference way of dealing a piece of news, some reporters would think they were being suppressed.

“But we are really not, “said Leong. He pointed out that TDM has a political program similar to the “City Forum” where citizens can freely debate on a social issue and comment on the government and the political parties. As a government funded station, Leong thought this can prove their independence.
